Having suffered from anxiety, panic attacks and
phobias for most of my life, two
years ago I became ill with a physical illness, which lasted for over 6 months.
I became deeply depressed and my Doctor sent me to see a psychologist, who was a
great help. He gave me a pamphlet about a support group called HAND UP.
I was afraid to go at first, but I rang one of the contact numbers and I talked
with someone who understood what I was going through. The person I spoke with
said, that if I wanted, a couple of group members could visit me before I
attended the group myself. I liked this idea, because I thought it would be
easier for me to attend the group if I already knew someone there.
I found the people who came to see me were very friendly and supportive, so I
decided to attend the next HAND UP support group meeting.
I have now been going to the support group meetings for over 18 months and I
love to help other people and share with them. We laugh a lot and enjoy our
meetings.
I
find that talking about my goals and keeping contact with others really helps. I
also enjoy the mental health readings, which help me understand my depression
and anxiety.
I have grown in self esteem and confidence and have even
joined a choir, which started in the group.
The support group has helped me become a more positive person and to enjoy life
again. I highly recommend HAND UP as a support group to anyone. It has changed
my life for the better.
